Feng shui (pronounced fung shway), which literally means ‘wind water’, is an ancient Chinese philosophy and practice based on the correct placement of objects within an environment. Feng shui takes into account the way in which the characteristics of a home or office building and the objects inside it will affect the health and good fortune of the people who live or work there.
The aim of the feng shui practitioner is to achieve a harmonious flow of positive energy or chi throughout the home or workspace. Feng shui takes the view that all spaces, within an environment, have their own chi and that the quality of that chi can be improved and helped to flow more gracefully and easily by the arrangement of objects within that space.
Feng shui practitioners believe that clutter gathers and holds negative chi; and negative chi brings misfortune, unhappiness and ill health to the people who live or work in the environment. The practitioner’s aim is to organise your home or workplace so that the environment encourages maximum health, wealth and happiness for you, your family or work colleagues.
The practitioner visits the location where the work is to be undertaken. Using a compass to determine the direction (east, north, south or west) of the doors and windows, they will calculate, in accordance with the astrology (birth date) of the main occupier the best way to balance the directions and the elements of wind, metal, wood and water.
Once these very complex calculations have been carried out the practitioner will, room by room, identify a range of ways in which the Chi should be guided around the space. The practitioner may advise that certain areas are painted in specific colours; that furniture should be re-arranged; that mirrors should be hung on specific walls; and that plants and specific feng shui symbols should be introduced.
A feng shui consultation can take anything from two hours to two days or more, depending on the size of the space that is being considered. The cost of the consultation will therefore, vary significantly, and this should also be agreed with the practitioner before the work is undertaken.
Feng shui is used to turn around failing businesses; to improve family relationships and help lone people find new love; to improve health, energy and well-being and protect and empower the individuals who live or work in the space being treated.
Clients report that following a feng shui consultation, once the changes have been implemented, not only is the space more attractive but also their domestic and family affairs improve, along with their health and sense of well-being. Many people throughout the world would not dream of buying a new house before consulting with their feng shui practitioner to ensure that the direction (and other factors) of the house are likely to bring them good luck and good health.
Feng shui is for everyone but it is important to recognise that the client must be prepared to make changes to the environment. In some circumstances these changes may involve significant and expensive work. For example, for some people a west facing front door is very lucky, whereas for others it is considered most inauspicious. A feng shui consultant might suggest that the front door is resited to face another direction. In feng shui, overhead beams are considered to be unlucky, and a consultant might suggest that they are removed and the ceiling re-plastered. Also, it is not unusual for consultants to recommend the addition of certain feng shui remedies such as mirrors, water features, wind chimes, crystals or dragon symbols. You should be prepared to add the cost of any remedies needed onto the cost of the consultation itself.
